Exterior Shades In Northborough, MA

Exterior Shades For Northborough Decks And Patios

Most of the colonials on Northborough's cul-de-sacs went up between the eighties and the early 2000s, and nearly every one of them has a deck off the kitchen. Which way that deck faces was decided by the road, not the sun, so plenty of them bake from midafternoon on. Exterior roller shades keep that heat off the slider and the seating, and we handle the whole job from our shop in downtown Natick.

Why Northborough

The Deck Off The Kitchen

Walk into almost any house on a Northborough cul-de-sac and the layout is familiar. Garage in front, kitchen and family room across the back, and a slider out to a deck that was built with the house. The developers who filled the land between Route 20 and the Assabet River set the houses square to the street, which means a good share of those decks take the full afternoon sun until it drops behind the trees.

An interior shade on that slider is working after the glass has already heated up. Exterior mesh stops the sun outside, and that one change blocks up to 90 percent of the solar heat because the sun never reaches the glass. The kitchen stops running hot at dinner time and the deck becomes a place to sit at four o'clock instead of a place to cross on the way to the grill.

Closer to Main Street the houses are older, the porches sit nearer the neighbors, and a tighter weave earns its keep. Out toward the orchards and farm stands on the edge of town the lots open up and the problem is pure sun with no tree line to help. Our exterior roller shades use marine grade fabric in aluminum housings on wind rated side tracks, which is what a shade needs if it is going to live outside through a Massachusetts summer.

Kevin owns the company and does the measuring and the installing himself, so the person who looked at your deck is the person who mounts the shade. Northborough is an easy trip for us, out Route 9 or across Route 20, and the Solomon Pond end near 290 is no farther than the center.

Where They Go

Where The Shades Go On A Northborough House

  • Kitchen decks with a roof or pergola. The shade mounts to the structure and drops on the side the sun comes from. A bare deck needs a pergola first, and we will say so up front.
  • Farmhouse porches near the center. The older houses along Route 20 have deep front porches, many facing west. A shade on the sun end keeps the rest of the porch open.
  • Three-season rooms. The glass box off the back of a colonial is the hottest room in the house by July. Mesh on the outside keeps it usable without air conditioning a room nobody is in.
  • Patios under a pergola on the larger lots. A pergola breaks the overhead sun and does nothing about the low sun at six. Mount a side shade on the pergola posts and the job is finished.

Northborough Questions

What Northborough Homeowners Want To Know

Our deck has no roof. Can we still add exterior shades?

Not to the deck itself. The shade needs a structure to mount to, so a roof overhang, a pergola, or a screened section. Many Northborough decks get a pergola first and the shades second, and we are glad to look at the deck and tell you which side needs cover before you build anything.

What happens when a summer storm blows through while we are at work?

A motorized shade with a wind sensor retracts on its own when the gusts pick up, so the fabric is rolled into its aluminum housing before the storm arrives. The fabric is marine grade and the side tracks are wind rated, so a normal breeze is nothing to think about. Where the sensor earns its keep is the day nobody is home to press the button.

Do we need a motor, or is manual fine?

It depends on the width. Anything wider than about eight feet should be motorized because the shade is heavy at that size and the motor makes raising it a ten second job. A single slider opening is fine manual. We measure first and tell you which side of the line you are on.
