Plantation Shutters In Northborough, MA

Plantation Shutters For Northborough Bathrooms, Foyers, And Bays

The question we hear most from Northborough is about the bathroom. Can shutters go in there? They can, in composite, and the same house almost always has a two-story foyer window and a front bay that want hardwood. Kevin, who owns the company, drives out Route 20 from Natick to measure all three, and he is the one who comes back to install them.

Why Northborough

Built For The Houses On Northborough's Cul-De-Sacs

Most of Northborough's housing went up between the 1980s and the 2000s, on cul-de-sacs off Route 20 and Route 9 and the roads that run toward 290 and 495. Builders of that period liked a two-story foyer with a tall window over the front door, a bay in the living or dining room, and a main bathroom with a window right over the tub.

That tub window is where the composite conversation starts. Hardwood does not like steam. Composite does not mind it, and it paints the same crisp white, so the bathrooms get composite and nobody can tell from the hallway. Hardwood goes on the foyer and bay windows, where it is lighter to swing and can take stain if you want it to match the millwork.

The foyer window is the one people put off because it is high. We build the panel to that opening like any other and hang it once. After that it does not need a ladder to adjust, and unlike a drape it will not fade on the south side after ten summers. The construction details are on our shutters page if you want to see how the panels are made.

Northborough still has its orchards and farm stands, and a few of the older houses along Main Street and near the Assabet carry the smaller panes of an earlier era. Those get the 2.5 inch louver. The newer houses take the 4.5 inch. We carry both, and the decision takes about a minute once they are held against the glass.

Where They Go

Four Windows In A Northborough Colonial

  • Bathrooms, in composite. The window over the tub, the one beside the shower, the small one in the powder room. Composite shrugs off the moisture and paints white.
  • The two-story foyer window. A single tall panel or a stacked pair, hung once and left alone. Tilt the louvers to cut glare on the stairs without darkening the entry.
  • Front and dining room bays. A panel for each angled opening, 4.5 inch louvers, hidden rear tilt if you want the view of the street uninterrupted.
  • The kitchen sink window. Composite again, because it lives above running water. Cordless, so nothing dangles into the sink.

Northborough Questions

What Northborough Homeowners Ask About Shutters

Can plantation shutters go in a bathroom with a shower?

Yes, in composite. Composite shutters are made for moisture, so steam from a shower and splashes from a tub do not swell or warp them. They paint the same white as hardwood, so the bathroom matches the rest of the house. We use composite in every bathroom and kitchen we do, and hardwood in the dry rooms.

How do you handle the tall window over the front door?

We measure it like any other opening, build a panel to fit, and hang it with the frame profile that meets your casing. Once it is up it stays put. There is no cord and nothing to maintain but the louvers, which is the point of a permanent treatment somewhere hard to reach. Kevin brings the ladder.

Are shutters worth it compared with shades for a house we just bought?

For a house you plan to stay in, yes. Shutters cost around two to three times what roller or cellular shades cost per window, and they last decades without fabric fading or a mechanism wearing out. They also stay with the house and appear in the listing if you sell. We quote both if you want to compare.
