Exterior Roller Shades

Exterior Shades For Your Outdoor Space

Massachusetts only gives us so many good months outside. Exterior roller shades stretch that season by blocking heat, glare, and wind on your porch or patio, so the best room in the house stays usable longer. We measure, spec, and install them across Greater Boston.

Why Exterior

Stop The Heat Before It Reaches The Glass

An interior shade blocks light after the sun has already heated the glass. Mounted outside, the same mesh fabric stops the heat before it reaches the glass, which is why it performs several times better. On a west facing porch, that is the difference between comfortable and unusable from 3 p.m. on.

The fabric choices are simple. An open weave mesh works like sunglasses: heat and glare drop dramatically while the view of the yard stays. Tighter weaves add privacy from neighbors. Clear vinyl panels can even hold warmth in on cooler evenings.

Everything is built for weather. Marine grade fabric, aluminum housings, and side tracks rated for wind. When a storm is coming, a motorized unit retracts into its housing in about ten seconds.

If the sun problem is on the inside of the glass, our interior roller shades handle glare there too.

Around here the porch season runs roughly Memorial Day to Columbus Day if you do nothing. Clients who added exterior shades and a patio heater tell us they are still eating dinner outside in late October. That is what these shades are for.

Where They Go

Built For Porches, Patios, And Storefronts

  • Covered porches. Drop the shades and a breezy porch becomes a calm outdoor room, with the bugs and low sun kept out.
  • Patios and pergolas. Side mounted shades block the low western sun that roofs and canopies miss.
  • Sunrooms. Exterior mesh keeps summer heat off the glass so the room stays comfortable without running the AC all day.
  • Restaurants and cafes. Outdoor tables only earn money when people want to sit at them. Shade sells seats, and we install commercial jobs across Greater Boston.

Common Questions

Exterior Shade Questions We Hear Most

Will exterior shades survive New England weather?

Yes, with the right spec, and getting the spec right is our job. Marine grade fabrics, aluminum housings, and wind rated tracks handle summer storms fine. Come winter we recommend retracting them into the housing, which takes about ten seconds on a motorized unit.

How much heat do exterior shades actually block?

Up to 90 percent of solar heat gain, because the sunlight never reaches the glass. No interior treatment comes close to that number. Most clients tell us they wish they had done it years earlier.

Should exterior shades be manual or motorized?

For anything wider than about eight feet, motorized. Large exterior shades are heavy, and a motor with a wind sensor can retract them automatically when gusts pick up, protecting your investment while you are away.
