Exterior Shades In Stow, MA

Exterior Shades For Stow Porches And Patios

In Stow the sun has nothing in its way. It comes across the orchards, the fairways, and Lake Boon with no neighboring house to soften it, and it lands on whatever porch or patio faces west. Exterior roller shades take that heat out before it reaches you or the glass behind you. We measure and install them ourselves, driving out from Natick.

Why Stow

Open Land Means Nothing Blocks The Sun

Most of the towns we work in have a sun problem caused by a neighbor's yard or a slider off the kitchen. Stow is different. The lots are big, the houses sit back from Route 62 and Route 117 at the end of long driveways, and the view from the back of the house is a field, an orchard, or a fairway. It is a fine place to sit until about three in the afternoon, when the light comes straight across all that open ground and there is not a thing to stop it.

The antique farmhouses and colonials that give Stow its character were built with porches for exactly that reason, and the porches still work in the morning. By late afternoon the sun gets under the roof. An exterior mesh shade at the porch opening stops it there. The open weave keeps the view of the field, which in Stow is the whole reason you bought the house.

Privacy, the usual reason to go to a tighter weave, hardly matters here. Temperature does. Evenings on a big lot cool off fast once the sun is gone, and clear vinyl panels can hold the warmth in on a porch in late September. The fabrics, housings, and tracks are all covered on our exterior roller shades page.

The Lake Boon side of town gets a second dose of sun bounced up off the water. That calls for a tighter weave facing the lake and open mesh on the other sides, a combination we know well.

Where They Go

Farmhouse Porches, Patios, And Lake Boon

  • Farmhouse porches. Long porches with several bays between the posts. We shade the two or three bays the low sun hits and leave the rest open.
  • Patios with a pergola or roof. The shade needs a structure. A pergola works well, and the shade drops on the west face while the pergola keeps its open feel.
  • Sunrooms and additions. Plenty of Stow houses added a glass room on the back to look at the land. Mesh on the outside keeps that room usable in August without the air conditioner fighting the glass.
  • Lake Boon houses. Tighter weave on the water side, open mesh everywhere else, and the lake stays in view.

Stow Questions

Questions From Stow Homeowners

With no neighbors in sight, do we need the privacy fabric?

No. Privacy weaves cost you some of the view, and in Stow the view is the point. Open weave mesh cuts the heat and the glare and leaves the field or the orchard visible. The only time we suggest going tighter on a Stow job is on a side facing the water.

Our farmhouse porch posts are old and nothing is plumb. Can side tracks still be fitted?

Yes. Each bay is measured on its own and the shade is built to that opening, not to a stock size. Part of Kevin's first visit is checking that the posts and header can carry the housing, because a shade is only as good as what it is screwed to. If a post needs attention first, we will say so.

How much do the wind sensors matter out here?

More than in a built-up town. Wind crosses open fields with nothing to slow it, and a gust can hit a lowered shade hard. A motorized shade with a wind sensor retracts itself when the wind picks up, even when nobody is home. Anything wider than about eight feet should be motorized anyway.
