Exterior Shades In Walpole, MA

Exterior Shades For Walpole Screened Porches

Walpole is a screened porch town. The capes and colonials that went up from the fifties on, from East Walpole over to South Walpole, added them by the hundreds, and the larger houses south of the center were built with them. Screen stops bugs. It does nothing about the sun that comes under the porch roof at five. Exterior roller shades fix that, and we install them from our shop in Natick, a straight shot down Route 27.

Why Walpole

Why The Screened Porch Empties Out At Four

A screened porch is the best room in a Walpole house from June to September, right up until the sun gets low enough to come in sideways. Overhead sun is the roof's job. Once the sun drops below the fascia the roof handles nothing, and on a west facing porch that starts in the middle of the afternoon. People get up, go inside, and the porch sits empty through the nicest part of the day.

An exterior mesh shade mounts to the porch frame on the sun side and drops over the screen. It stops the heat and the glare outside, which is why the same fabric performs several times better out there than any shade hung indoors. An open weave keeps the view of the yard, and on the older streets where the houses sit close, a tighter weave gives the porch some privacy from the next deck over.

The mix in Walpole is wide. Postwar capes near the center on Route 27, colonials on the streets running toward Bird Park and the Adams Farm trails, and bigger houses on bigger lots down toward South Walpole and the Neponset. The porch sizes vary just as much, and past about eight feet of width a shade should be motorized. It is heavy at that size, and the motor pairs with a wind sensor that pulls the shade up on its own when a storm comes through.

Our exterior roller shades use marine grade fabric, aluminum housings, and wind rated side tracks. Kevin, our owner, drives out to Walpole himself to measure and comes back himself to install. He will tell you within a few minutes on the porch which side needs a shade and which side does not.

Where They Go

Where Shades Go On A Walpole House

  • Screened porches. Mesh on the sun side, mounted to the frame. The rest of the porch stays screen and stays breezy.
  • Decks under a roof or pergola. The deck off the kitchen gets a shade on the structure above it. A deck with nothing overhead needs that structure first, and we will say so.
  • Three-season rooms. Glass on three sides makes an oven by August. Exterior mesh keeps the heat off the glass and the room in use.
  • Patios behind the newer houses to the south. Pergola posts carry a side shade that blocks the low sun the pergola misses.

Walpole Questions

Questions From Walpole Porch Owners

Can we add shades to a screened porch without rebuilding it?

Yes. The shade mounts to the existing porch structure and drops over the opening on the side the sun comes from, and the screen stays where it is. Kevin checks the framing when he measures to make sure it will carry the housing.

The neighbors are close. Can we get privacy without closing the porch in?

A tighter weave mesh does that. From the porch you still see out, and from the next yard the porch reads as a dark panel. It costs a little of the view compared to an open weave, and on the smaller lots near the center most people find that a fair trade. We bring both weaves so you can compare them in place.

What do we do with them in the winter?

Roll them into the housing after the last warm weekend and leave them there. Fabric left down under snow is the one thing that shortens the life of an exterior shade. On a motorized unit it is about ten seconds, and they come back down in April.
