Exterior Shades In Southborough, MA

Exterior Shades For Southborough Porches And Decks

Anyone who has driven the causeway across the Sudbury Reservoir at five on a summer afternoon knows the glare Southborough deals with. The houses that look at the water get it on the porch all evening, and the newer colonials on the old farmland get the same low sun with nothing to soften it. Exterior roller shades stop both before they reach the glass. We measure and install them from downtown Natick, a short drive up Route 9.

Why Southborough

Low Sun Off The Water

Glare off water comes from below. A porch roof that shades you perfectly at noon does nothing about light bouncing up off the reservoir at six, and the same is true of a deck that looks across open lawn. On the streets around the water and near the causeway, that is the complaint we hear: the porch is fine until dinner, and then it is not.

An exterior mesh shade on the water side of the porch stops the bounce outside the screen or the glass. On a porch that faces the water we spec a slightly tighter weave than we would elsewhere, because it handles the low angle better, and it still keeps the view. Up to 90 percent of the solar heat stops at the mesh, so the porch cools down along with the glare.

The rest of Southborough has the more familiar problem. Off Route 85 and out toward the 495 end of town, the big colonials built on former farmland have kitchens and decks across the back, and whichever way the builder pointed them is the way they face. The older homes in the center near Fay School and St. Mark's, and the houses in Fayville, have porches that were built for sitting on. A shade on the sun end brings that back.

We use the same exterior roller shades everywhere: marine grade fabric, aluminum housings, and wind rated side tracks so they can stay out all season. Kevin, the owner, does his own measuring and his own installing, and he has been on enough west facing porches at the wrong hour to know where the shade needs to go.

Porches, Decks, And Sunrooms Around Southborough

  • Reservoir facing porches. A tighter weave on the water side stops the bounce and keeps the view of the causeway.
  • Decks off the kitchen on the newer streets. Mount to the roof or pergola, drop on the sun side. A deck with nothing overhead needs a pergola before it can take a shade.
  • Center and Fayville porches. Older houses with real porches and a west end that gets the evening sun. One shade on that end does it.
  • Three-season rooms. Mesh outside the glass keeps August heat out, and a clear vinyl panel keeps September warmth in.

Southborough Questions

Southborough Questions, Answered

Will a shade stop the glare off the reservoir without blocking the view?

Yes, with the right weave. A tighter mesh on the water side handles low angle bounce better than an open one, and you still see the water through it. We bring both weaves and hold them up on your porch at the time of day the glare is worst.

Do the shades cut the wind, or just the sun?

Both. The mesh takes the edge off a breeze coming across the water, which is why clients tell us the porch feels warmer in September with the shade down. Add a patio heater and late October dinners outside are realistic. In the winter the shade rolls into its housing.

Do we need to be home when a storm comes through?

Not with a motorized shade and a wind sensor. The sensor retracts the shade into its aluminum housing when the gusts pick up, with nobody home to press a button. Manual shades are fine for small openings, but anything wider than about eight feet should have the motor.
