Exterior Shades In Medway, MA

Exterior Shades For Medway Decks And Pool Patios

Medway lots run deep, and the back of a Medway house is where the summer happens: a deck off the kitchen, an above-ground pool a few steps down, and a patio somewhere between. All of it faces the same sun. Exterior roller shades put shade over the seating so the pool afternoon does not end when the sun gets low, and we measure and install from downtown Natick, down Route 126 through Holliston.

Why Medway

Pool Days That Last Past Five

The pattern on the newer streets north and west of the village is consistent. A deck comes off the kitchen slider, the pool sits in the yard below it, and the deck is where the adults sit while the kids are in the water. From about three on, the sun is in everyone's face on that deck, and a patio umbrella does nothing for sun coming in from the side.

An exterior shade mounted to the deck roof or pergola and dropped on the sun side changes the afternoon. Up to 90 percent of the solar heat stops at the mesh because the sun never reaches the glass or the chairs behind it. You can watch the pool through an open weave the way you would through sunglasses. If the neighbor's deck looks right at yours, a tighter weave takes care of that too.

Medway Village is a different house. Nineteenth century homes along Route 109 with porches that were built for shade in the first place, before the street trees came down and the road got busy. A mesh shade on the west end of one of those porches brings back what the porch was for. Down along the Charles on the southern edge of town, the glare off the water is the issue more than the heat, and the fix is the same shade in a tighter weave.

Every one of our exterior roller shades is built to be left outside from spring to the end of the season, with marine grade fabric, an aluminum housing, and wind rated side tracks. Kevin, who owns the business, measures the openings in person and installs the shades in person. He will also tell you plainly if a spot needs a pergola before it can take a shade.

Where They Go

Decks, Pools, And Porches In Medway

  • Decks above the pool. Mount to the roof or pergola, drop on the sun side, and the deck becomes the shaded seat for pool duty.
  • Screened porches on the newer houses. Screen for the bugs, mesh for the heat. Together they make the porch a room you use from dinner until dark.
  • Village porches on Route 109. Older houses with deep porches and a western end that bakes. One shade on that end and the porch is back in service.
  • Three-season rooms. Exterior mesh keeps August heat off the glass, and a clear vinyl panel holds warmth in when the evenings turn cool in September.

Medway Questions

Medway Questions, Answered Straight

We have an above-ground pool with a deck around it. Can shades go there?

Only if there is something to mount to. A pool deck with a pergola or a roof section over the seating can take a shade. Open railings with nothing above them cannot. Most people put the shade on the house deck that overlooks the pool instead, since that is where everyone actually sits.

It gets cool by the pool in September. Do the shades help with that?

The mesh cuts wind as well as sun, which makes a real difference on a September evening. Clear vinyl panels go a step further and hold warmth in on the deck or porch. Clients who pair exterior shades with a patio heater tell us they are still having dinner outside in late October.

How much of the heat do they really stop?

Up to 90 percent of the solar heat gain, because the sun is blocked before it reaches the glass or the seating. No interior shade can get near that, since it is working on light that has already come through the window. On a west facing deck the difference is obvious the first afternoon.
