Plantation Shutters In Maynard, MA

Plantation Shutters For Maynard's Older Windows

Maynard is a mill town, and the houses near the old mill complex and the Assabet were built for the people who worked there: Victorians and two-families on small lots, with tall narrow windows and a neighbor a driveway away. Plantation shutters fit that kind of window and solve that kind of privacy problem. Each panel is built to the opening you have, and we come out from Natick to measure and install it.

Why Maynard

Tall Windows, Small Lots

Walk the streets that fan out from the mill and you see the same window over and over: a tall, narrow double-hung, set singly or in pairs, on a house that has settled a bit over the last hundred years. Stock blinds never look right in them. The proportions are wrong and the frames are rarely square. A plantation shutter is built to the measured opening, so an out-of-square frame gets a panel that is out of square by the same amount and looks like it was always there.

The lots near the center are close enough that a first-floor window can look straight into the kitchen or living room next door. Louvers solve that better than any shade. Tilt them up and the light comes in off the ceiling while the sightline from the sidewalk is gone. Fold the panels back on a Sunday morning and the whole window is open. Our shutters page walks through the materials and frame styles.

On the ranches and capes further out toward Route 117 and Route 62 the windows are wider and squarer, and the question there is louver size. A 4.5 inch louver reads modern and airy on a picture window. The 2.5 inch louver suits the small panes on an older house. We bring both sizes and hold them up in the room.

There is one more argument for shutters in a town where houses change hands regularly. They are a permanent fixture that conveys with the house, shows up in the listing photos, and spares the next owner from buying window treatments.

Where They Go

Kitchens, Front Rooms, And Odd Shapes

  • Kitchen windows over the sink. Composite shutters shrug off steam and splashes, and a tilt of the louvers gives you light without the neighbor's view of your dishes.
  • Victorian front rooms. Tall narrow double-hungs get two panels apiece, 2.5 inch louvers, and a frame that hugs the existing trim.
  • Bathrooms. Composite again, painted white, with the louvers angled up for privacy and light at the same time.
  • Bays and specialty windows. Bay windows, arches, and the angled window in a gable are all built to the measured shape. The odd ones are the ones we enjoy.

Maynard Questions

Shutter Questions From Maynard

Our Victorian's windows are tall, narrow, and nothing is square. Will shutters fit?

Yes. Every panel is built to the measurements Kevin takes on the visit, not to a stock size, so a frame that leans gets a panel that leans with it. On a tall narrow window we build two panels with a 2.5 inch louver, which keeps the proportions right. Once they are in, the fit reads as original to the house.

What material goes over the kitchen sink?

Composite. It handles the steam and the splashing without swelling, and it paints the same crisp white as hardwood. Hardwood is lighter and takes a stain, which makes it the pick for a living room or a bedroom where moisture is not an issue.

Are shutters worth two to three times the cost of shades on a small Maynard house?

For a house you plan to keep, yes. Shutters run roughly two to three times what roller or cellular shades cost per window, and they last for decades. They are a fixture of the house rather than a furnishing, they add a real thermal barrier when closed on a January night, and they are one of the few window treatments a buyer notices. If you want a price for shades alongside them, we will bring one.
